Operation Tightrope

Instructor, Pioneer Rope Class

The purpose of the Pioneer rope class is to teach safe techniques for crossing a water (or similar) obstacle using a squad rope in conjunction with individual rope harnesses (rappel seats); to learn basic rappelling skills; and to build teamwork skills and espirit de corps.

How do you get a bunch of people and a ton of gear safely across a river? One way is to bulid a one rope bridge. How about down a cliff? One way is to rappel. To do that you need specialized skills and a lot of practice. You can't learn that by looking at the pictures. Get training if you want to attempt any of these skills on your own. I am qualified to teach these skills by virtue of my own training and experience both at Fort Knox and as an avid, trained, rock climber. This stuff can be very dangerous if not done correctly - you have been warned. That is what the main thrust of the Pioneer rope class was this year.

Assisted by Doc, I began the morning teaching the most basic knots needed for the day. A good knot, bend, or hitch is suited to its purpose, strong, easy to tie and easy to untie after subjected to stress.

The pioneers were responsible for the following knots:

Overhand
Figure Eight
Overhand Loop
Figure Eight Loop
Reef or Square Knot
Round Turn with Two Half Hitches
Bowline
Transport Tightening Knot System
Tensionless Anchor Knot

They were required to know these knots well enough to tie them behind their backs by the end of the day. Yes, they were tested. Yes, they passed.

In addition they were required to master the steps necessary to install a rope bridge, move troops and gear across, and remove the bridge once they reached the other side of the obstacle. This had to be accomplished in fifteen minutes or less on dry land. Yes, they were tested. Yes, they passed.

While I do not intend to get into any more detail regarding Pioneer training than I already have, let me say that the team did a great job. Everyone felt a sense of satisfaction by the end, and everyone gained some confidence to boot. If this all seems like something you'd like to do, get out here and train. Get into the Pioneer course, make some sacrifices and claim your reward.
